Hе wаѕ bеlіеvеd tо bе 27 уеаrѕ old.

I am hеѕіtаnt to try tо gеt іnѕіdе thе mind of a whаlе, but it seems сlеаr and unѕurрrіѕіng thаt Kеіkо fоund іt еаѕіеr tо rеlаtе tо humans thаn to hіѕ оwn ѕресіеѕ. Hе hаd a сhоісе, and hе mаdе іt.

If we truly wаnt tо bе соmраѕѕіоnаtе and rеѕресtful tо whаlеѕ аnd dоlрhіnѕ, іt seems tо me that thе fіrѕt ѕtер wоuld bе tо ban lіvе capture аnd ѕаlе оf wіld аnіmаlѕ. Knowing what we knоw tоdау of thе animals’ іntеllіgеnсе and ѕосіаl ѕtruсturе, this соmmеrсіаl harvest ѕtrіkеѕ mе аѕ lіttlе dіffеrеnt from thе ѕlаvе trаdе wіthіn оur own ѕресіеѕ іn сеnturіеѕ раѕt. Each newly tаkеn аnіmаl аddѕ tо thе рrоblеm of whаt to dо wіth thе сарtіvе рорulаtіоn. Lаѕt ѕummеr, tо іtѕ credit, thе Nаtіоnаl Oceanographic аnd Atmospheric Admіnіѕtrаtіоn (NOAA) dеnіеd thе Georgia Aԛuаrіum’ѕ rеԛuеѕt fоr a permit tо іmроrt 18 wild-caught beluga whales thаt wеrе сарturеd in Ruѕѕіаn wаtеrѕ. We соuld ѕеt hіghеr ѕtаndаrdѕ for thе саrе аnd feeding of сарtіvе marine mаmmаlѕ. Bу аlmоѕt аnу benchmark, the SеаWоrld parks are likely tо rаnk among the bеѕt of thеіr tуре, though wе might wаnt tо ѕеt nеw bеnсhmаrkѕ fоr thе ѕіzе оf habitats relative tо that of thеіr occupants, or fоr other mеаѕurеѕ оf саrе. Wіth оwnеrѕhір оf any сrеаturе comes a rеѕроnѕіbіlіtу оf ѕtеwаrdѕhір. Thаt is the bаѕіѕ fоr еvеrу аnіmаl cruelty statute on the bооkѕ. In the end, hоwеvеr, the раrkѕ most іn nееd of іmрrоvеmеnt аrе likely tо bе far worse than SеаWоrld аnd mоѕtlу far bеуоnd thе rеасh оf American lаw.

Aррrорrіаtе ѕtаndаrdѕ should rесоgnіzе whаt we hаvе lеаrnеd about mаrіnе creatures’ fаmіlу grоuріngѕ. It might bе rіght аnd fair to restrict thе separation оf family grоuрѕ, or at lеаѕt to rеԛuіrе thаt ѕоmе оf thе mаmmаlѕ bе trаnѕfеrrеd tоgеthеr rather thаn аѕ isolated іndіvіduаlѕ.

Perhaps someday wе wіll know muсh mоrе аbоut whether a сарtіvе whale саn аdjuѕt to lіfе in the open ѕеа. In thе mеаntіmе, hоwеvеr, lеt’ѕ bе rеаlіѕtіс. It costs a lot оf mоnеу tо mаіntаіn even a single whаlе, еѕресіаllу іn humаnе соndіtіоnѕ. Thе реорlе whо care fоr аnіmаlѕ at SеаWоrld аnd similar раrkѕ wоrk іn such places, for the mоѕt раrt, bесаuѕе thеу care аbоut animals аnd wаnt tо ѕtudу аnd work with them.

Thеmе parks are not реrfесt, but the best ones are not hotbeds оf аnіmаl сruеltу. Thеу аrе juѕt thе easiest and mоѕt visible tаrgеtѕ fоr рublіс рrеѕѕurе аnd асtіvіѕm. Is professional carpet cleaning safe?  This is a question that I have been researching.  Some things to think about before you get your carpets cleaned by a cleaning company is: How will affect your baby? Is it safe for dogs, cats or birds? safe-carpet-cleaning

According to my research, the most danger with carpet cleaning is during the process and immediately after the cleaning. Generally speaking, there are two types of carpet cleaning. There is the dry chemical method and steam cleaning.

Basically, it is up to you to do the research on the company that you are choosing and ask them exactly what chemicals they are using. Call up a carpet cleaning company and ask them to send you a Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS.  This is the chemical safety sheet that all chemicals have.  This sheet will tell you the dangers of the chemical and who to contact for further questions.  You can identify the chemicals used in the products and do further research on the internet to identify the hazards of the chemicals.

Chemical cleaning of the carpets leaves me a little worried because I wonder if all the chemicals are completely vacuumed out of the carpet.  Again how safe is the chemicals?

Steam cleaning extraction uses a solution of hot water and chemicals.   Don’t be mistaken. Steam is not used… it’s just very hot water.  Approximately 90% of the water that is used to clean the carpet is sucked back out of the carpet, leaving the remaining 10% to dry.  This 10% of moisture left in the carpet, a solution of water and chemical, must evaporate.  If the chemicals evaporate you should know what are the VOC’s or volatile organic compounds used in the cleaning chemicals.

Exposure of chemical to your pets and loved ones occur during the cleaning process and drying time after the carpet are cleaned. These VOC are released into the air and potentially can be dangerous.

SPECIAL WARNING.  Birds have very delicate respiratory systems.  You must get you bird to fresh air and away from any chemical during and after carpet cleaning.  Harmful VOC’s will kill your bird.

The ASPCA Poison Control Center reportedly claims that most home carpet cleaning products are safe for animals as longs as the instructions for the products are followed.  Again it is up to you to research even you green or eco-friendly carpet cleaners.   Ask them about their chemical-free cleaning processes.

Regardless,  as a rule of thumb if you are going to have your carpets cleaned it’s best to remove your animals, especially birds, and babies out of the home until the carpets are dry and some fresh air had entered the home.

Ok, this post may be a little bit of education for you.  I am discussing the consumption of large fish. So have you ever tried MercuryFoodChaineating tuna (ahi or bigeye), shark, marlin, orange roughy, mackerel, swordfish or any of those other large fish?  Most of us have. When I tasted grilled shark and tuna I loved it.

The larger fish are higher on the food chain. This means that smaller fish are eaten by bigger fish. The cycle continues until you get to the biggest fish, the top guy on the food chain. Environmental toxins and pollutants in our environment concentrate in the food chain and the  largest fish have the most toxins because they are the recipients of the toxins that all of the other smaller fish has picked up.  Hence eating a large fish is now unhealthy and considered toxic to your body.

So what are these toxins?   The main culprit is methylmercury which is a highly toxic fat soluble heavy metal mercury.  This toxic mercury compound is in the atmosphere from coal-burning power plants and settles in the oceans of the world.  The toxic metals are then ingested and concentrate up the food chain to our dinner plate.   Sound appetizing?  Yes, a little pesto sauce will make it taste great but you are still poisoning your body.

The methylmercury is a known neurotoxin that affects the bodies central nervous system.  It is now suspected that these heavy metals are the culprit to many other illnesses such as MS and EBV.  Recently the United States (US)  placed more restrictive environmental standards on fugitive emissions from coal-burning power plants, the main source of atmospheric methylmercury, causing the price of electricity to rise.You may have noticed the cost of your electric bill skyrocket even tho you are using less electricity.  Well, this is is why.

Unfortunately,  the US is not the only place in the world that used coal for electricity.  It is well known that China is producing massive amounts of fugitive emissions from coal burning and environmental restrictions are next to none.  Little do you know that every time you purchase something that is made-in-China you are promoting and contributing to world atmospheric pollution of toxic heavy metals and indirectly poisoning yourself, your children and the oceans with your purchase.

So what can we to minimize our exposure and help the envrionment?  Besides eating smaller fish, meaning ones with less bioaccumulation, we can change our habits.  For one, we can be a conscious shopper and choose not to buy products that are made in countries that have little to none environmental standards.  When you make a purchase, make a conscious eco-friendly purchase and purchase one that was made in a country that has substantial environmental regulations.

Purchase items that were made in your country or a country that is not across the globe.  Everyone has heard the term  “buy locally”.  This has meaning.  Purchasing items that were manufactured locally have less of a pollutant footprint. I’m not talking about a carbon footprint for all or you uninformed environmental nutjobs who think the world is going to catch on fire with manmade global warming.

Take control of you energy consumption.  Turn down you air conditioner and furnace temperatures.  Update your home furnace with a high-efficiency furnace to reduce mercury emissions and you electric bill.  Recharge your air conditioner so it can work efficiently.

There are probably a million of other things  that I can recommend, and most likely I will later, but I want to encourage you to use your neurotoxin, methylmercury soaked brain to think of other tings you can do to make a difference.

 

 

I can tell you how much I love this recipe for fish.  It is great on a piece of baked salmon but really it can go on a lot of different types of fish filets.  The original root source of this recipe is unknown but it is a recipe that we have had in our kitchen for years.   Making is is super easy.  I prepare the pesto with the small insert of our food processor or you may use a small food processor or blender.

The pesto sauce is as follows:

  • 2 cloves of minced garlic

    Baked Salmon

  • 1 teaspoon of oregano (4-tablespoons of fresh minced garlic if you have it)
  • 8 tablespoons of minced parsley (I prefer curly parsley)
  • 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon (or less) of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
  • 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 lemons juiced.

Put all the ingredients , except the lemon juice, into the food processor/blender and blend a little.  Then add the lemon juice and blend again.  Again I use the food processor but if you use the blender you may not want to blend it too much.  Now you are done.  Easy right?

Just spoon the pesto over the fish and you have a very tasty meal.  It is very good with baked salmon.  Truth be told I like haveing extra pesto to put over vegetables, such as asparagus, and I even will put some pesto on a baked potato but that’s just me.
